Academic Requirements
Final Examinations /Recommendations
- All grade levels at PGSS will have the opportunity to write course final examinations.
- Students may be recommended in
- Grade 8 - Science, French
- Grade 9 - Social Studies, French
- Grade 10 - French
- Recommendations are intended to increase student achievement by supporting regular attendance and act as an incentive for students to take greater responsbility for their day-to-day learning.
Recommendation Criteria
- Teachers will recommend student exemption from writing a course final examination under the following conditions:
- An overall course average of 73% (B) or better for the semester or year, and
- Not more than 5 days of recorded class absences in each class per semester, and
- Satisfactory or better work habits for each reporting period.
- Appeals may be directed to the Principal.
Course Loads
- Students in grades 8, 9, 10 & 11 are expected to take a full course load of four classes each semester
- Grade 12 students are expected to take a minimum of seven courses over two semesters.
- Grade 12 students may be granted a second prep block if they have a minimum of four provincially examinable courses and they meet graduation requirements.
- Senior students are responsible to ensure their course selections meet the graduation requirements of the Ministry of Education and to confirm this with their counsellor.
- In exceptional circumstances, grade 12 students may seek approval to drop a course.
- Approval must be sought prior to the week ending the distribution of term 1 and term 3 report cards.
- Dropping a course after this time period may potentially impact both Honor Roll and Passport to Education.
Course Prerequisites
- In order to go on to the next grade level course, the student must have successfully passed the prior level course
- e.g. 50% or better in Social Studies 9 means you can take Social Studies 10
